Enthusiastic applause greeted Bea Manning last week when she gave a rousing talk to those attending worship about the need to construct a bathroom for the physically challenged on the Davis Hall level. She reminded us that our church will not be fully accessible until this bathroom is constructed.
She told us about a half-dozen handicapped seniors who had traveled more than an hour to attend a funeral at the church and had no access to a bathroom once they arrived because our elevator was not working.
"Is this the sort of welcome we want to offer?" Bea asked. She said, quite rightly, that this is unacceptable and then said, "We have to do better, and we have an incredible opportunity to address this problem right now!"
A parishioner who clearly cares about our community has pledged up to $9000 --- half the cost of a new bathroom --- and has challenged us to raise the rest by the end of May so the bathroom can be constructed this summer. This church has received extraordinarily generous gifts in recent months from people who are committed to our ministry and mission. We are very grateful.
As Bea said, there is no reason why we cannot reach our goal of $9000 by 31 May, and there is no excuse for us to not reach that goal.
In fact, we are already half-way there. One parishioner wrote out a check for $1000 on the spot Sunday, and another dropped a check for $1000 off at the office on Tuesday. As of today, we have almost $4500 in the bank.
Bea pointed out that this is a particularly good opportunity for those who were unable to pledge to the recent capital campaign or those who could not fulfill their capital campaign pledge to make a donation that will have a real and immediate impact.
Please consider helping our "beloved community" meet the goal and make our church fully accessible at long last!
