Our Minister

Richard F. Jones has been minister of the First Parish since October 1995. He is the church's thirtieth minister. Only five other ministers in 265 years have served the First Parish longer. Richard is a direct descendent of John Robinson, the Mayflower Pilgrim's pastor, and of Peter Folger, Benjamin Franklin's maternal grandfather. The Jones' in Richard's line were Quakers, one of whom, Rufus M. Jones, founded the American Friends Service Committee. Described in an article in YANKEE magazine as "an eminent Worcester historian", Richard designed innovative education programs for the Worcester Historical Museum prior to becoming a minister. (Interestingly, his great-great grandfather, the Rev. Dr. Ira S. Jones, was also a minister and historian and founded the historical society and museum in Hampton, New Hampshire.)

Richard Jones was a leader in the cultural life of Worcester. As curator and development officer at historic Mechanics Hall, he instituted one of Massachusetts' most popular concert series and worked with many well-known personalities, from cellist Yo Yo Ma to civil rights pioneer Rosa Parks. Richard served on the boards of directors of numerous organizations, was a contributing writer for Worcester Magazine, hosted his own radio program on Worcester's NPR station, and was even a musical consultant for the Merchant-Ivory film, "The Bostonians". Additionally, Richard has been a clinical counselor, specializing in work with court-adjudicated youth.

During Richard's ministry in Bolton, the First Parish has experienced significant growth. Staff positions have been added, church facilities have been renovated and made accessible to the physically challenged, and nine acres of land immediately behind the church were purchased as an investment in the future and to preserve a valuable swath of "green space". Richard sees the main challenge of his ministry as building community in a town and church that are changing rapidly. He seeks to honor the historic traditions of the First Parish while transforming it to meet the needs of a new century. Since it was gathered in 1741, the First Parish has offered a liberal Christian perspective on theological and social issues. Richard Jones is committed to maintaining that perspective and the church's unique voice.

Known for his engaging sermons and easy way with people, Richard lives with his Pembroke Welsh Corgi, Christi, in the 1798 Stephen P. Gardner house, the church's parsonage since 1870. He is available to church members for counsel and support at any time and provides pastoral care to those who are hospitalized, ill or housebound. Richard also conducts baptisms, weddings, and funeral and memorial services, all characterized by his unique "presence" and very personal approach.
